It is no secret that the
United States is a litigious society. Statistics show that
more U.S. citizens at some point in their lives will be involved in
some way in the litigation process. More and more CPAs are
being brought into lawsuits as "experts" by attorneys who need help
with the complex financial aspects of their cases. By virtue
of the training and experience they typically receive, CPAs are
uniquely qualified to provide important services in legal
disputes.
Overview of a Typical Lawsuit

Pleadings
- The plaintiff hires an attorney to seek restitution of damages

- The plaintiff attorney investigates the case (possibly with
the assistance of a CPA or other expert).

- If the defendant refuses to pay, the plaintiff's attorney

pleading).
- The defendant responds to the complaint with a motion or an
answer.

from the court regarding a variety of motions.
